Maurice Turnor Gardner LLP is a boutique private client law firm of top-tier lawyers based in London, and is renowned in the private wealth arena for the breadth and depth of its technical excellence. Our leading position is recognised by our peers and in the industry ('Residential property team of the year' – Chambers HNW Awards 2023, 'Contentious trusts and estates team of the year (midsize firm)' – STEP Private Client Awards 2022/23).

The firm is ranked in band one in the Chambers HNW 2023 guide for private wealth law, private wealth disputes and real estate: high value residential (with 17 individuals achieving a personal ranking) and is ranked by the Chambers UK 2023 guide for charities.

In addition, Maurice Turnor Gardner is ranked as a tier one firm in the 2023 Legal 500 guide for contentious trusts and probate, residential property and personal tax, trusts and probate, and is also ranked for Immigration and charities and not-for-profit (with 18 individuals achieving a personal ranking).

The firm has been included in Times Best Law Firms 2022 and commended for inheritance and succession.

Our specialist focus is providing UK advice and innovative solutions for ultra-high net worth clients, usually involving complex cross-border estate planning as an adjunct to UK lifetime and succession advice. We have experience of all the issues which affect wealthy individuals (and their families and trustees) and professional practices in the UK and elsewhere. We seek to understand all the legal, commercial and tax issues affecting our clients and to provide them with principled and practical legal solutions, working in partnership with them as their trusted advisers.

Real estate, dispute resolution, philanthropy and charities and immigration practices complement the firm’s traditional strengths in tax and estate planning, disputes relating to wealth and partnerships and professional practices.

Who should apply?

We look to recruit individuals with a proven academic record (a 2:1 or higher degree classification (achieved or predicted)) and a commitment to excellence. Applicants are likely to be highly motivated individuals (of any discipline) who set themselves high standards.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital, together with strong organisational skills and the ability to handle a busy and time pressured workload. Attributes such as integrity, flexibility, drive and resourcefulness are prerequisite and applicants are expected to show dedication, enterprise, self-confidence and ambition as well.

We operate a rotational “seat” system whereby you will spend six months with different fee earners to enable you to experience the different areas of practice within the firm (private client, real estate, charities, commercial and dispute resolution). Each trainee will have a mid-seat and end of seat review in addition to monthly informal “catch up” meetings with their mentor.

Throughout their two year training contract, all trainees undertake additional internal and external training to complement their LPC/SQE legal education.

As a trainee you will work closely with a senior lawyer, so that you will be involved in your supervisor’s work and learn how matters are handled on a day to day basis.

With the introduction of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam in September 2021, there are now a number of routes to qualification. Maurice Turnor Gardner’s implementation of the SQE can accommodate candidates who will qualify both under the traditional route (GDL/LPC) and those who pursue the SQE. However, we will only sponsor candidates who qualify under the SQE route.

Diversity and inclusion are key to our success in today's global market. We are committed to promoting equal opportunities for all staff, to preventing discrimination and to complying with Rule 6 of the Code of Conduct for Solicitors and with all current and any future anti-discrimination legislation and associated codes of practice. We recognise our people for their skills, experience and potential, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or disability.

Our vision for success is to:

create a culture where everyone feels valued and respected;

bring together people with differing and complementary skills, ideas and experience;

ensure people from diverse backgrounds feel motivated to develop their careers with us;

provide employment opportunities which are open and accessible to all on the basis of ability, skills, appropriate qualifications and aptitude for the job; and

support the evolution of a legal profession that reflects the diversity of the communities we seek to serve.

We are working to broaden access to Maurice Turnor Gardner LLP and to the legal profession as a whole. Our aims and objectives to implement our vision are to:

select the brightest and best graduates from the widest pool of suitably qualified candidates;

give talented students the opportunity and aspiration for a career in law;

where appropriate, take positive measures to attract applications for our workforce that reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate; and

create a culture of inclusion and respect.

We will meet the cost of all PGDL/SQE fees for those who accept a training contract with us for any law school year they have not already completed before accepting the offer. In addition, we will provide a maintenance grant of £7,500 per year for a maximum of two law school years. We do not sponsor students retrospectively.
